摘要

The article analyzes the construction of an environment favorable to the dissemination of distance education (EAD) from the characteristics of digital cities. This is a qualitative research based on bibliographical and documentary studies and on interviews with key actors involved in the development of the Piraí Digital Project. The main characteristics of the digital cities concept were studied as a constructive potentiator for the expansion of EAD and technological development initiatives implemented in the city of Piraí-RJ associated with the educational context. The results show that the technological development effects associated with the idea of the digital city in Piraí-RJ provided an environment conducive to the educational process, since they increased the contact of the population with new knowledge and created better teaching conditions in public schools, which contributed, directly and indirectly, to expand the possibilities of training and capacity building with the EaD.
