Assessment of the nutritional value of food rations of women with rheumatoid arthritis

Introduction : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is considered an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. In the prevention of this complication, in addition to the adjustment of pharmacological therapy, it is recommended to reduce risk factors, including nutrition, physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight. Aim of the study : The purpose of the study is to evaluate the energy value and composition of the daily food ration in postmenopausal women with RA. Material and methods: The study included 52 women, mean age 56 ±4.58 years, diagnosed with RA (Table I). The method of interview questionnaire was performed to assess the nutritional value of their diet and the calculations were made using the computer program Dietetyk. Results : In the study group, 38% of women had normal weight, 29% of women were overweight and 33% were obese. Increased values of waist circumference (? 80 cm) were reported in 39 women, representing 75% of the research group; the other women were characterized by the correct value of that index. In the diets of women increased energy intake from fat was observed, mainly of saturated fatty acids, and an abnormal ratio of n-6-3 fatty acids. There was also noted a low intake of folic acid and vitamin D, which covered 68% and 29% of recommended values, and potassium and calcium, and a small deficiency of magnesium. In the case of phosphorus and sodium, their excessive consumption was recorded (Table II, Fig. 1, 2). Conclusions : The study revealed some irregularities in the diet of patients with RA, and indicated the need for greater control of diet in mentioned persons.
