AdigestibilitytrialandagrowthperformancestudywerecarriedouttoevaluatethepotentialofTrichantheragiganteaasasubstitutefortheconventionalproteinsourcesinthedietsofgrowingrabbits.Inthedigestibilitytrial,12malerabbitswereallocatedtofourdietarytreatmentsinacompletelyrandomiseddesignandrepeatedtwicetogivesixobservationspertreatment.Diet1wasacontrolformulatedtocontainconventionalingredientsforrabbitdiets.Diets2,3and4contained9%,18%and27%,respectivelyofTrichantheragiganteareplacingsimilarportionsofthecontroldiet.Apreliminaryperiodof7dayswasfollowedbysimilarnumberofdaysforcollectionperiod.Digestibilityofnutrientsofeachdietwasestimatedandmetabolisableenergypredicted.Inthegrowthstudy,48weanedrabbits(24malesand24females)wererandomlyallocatedtothefourdietsinacompletelyrandomisedblockdesign.Feedintake,growthperformance,feedconversionratioandslaughterparametersweremeasuredontheanimalsforaperiodof8weeks.ThecrudeproteinandcrudefibrecontentsofTrichantheragiganteawere23.9and23.8%indrymatter(DM),respectively.Themeanvaluesofcrudeproteinandetherextractdigestibilitydecreasedsignificantly(P0.05)from83.6to74.5%and91.0to76.4%,respectivelyandthatofcrudefibreincreasedfrom13.9to25.0%withincreasedlevelsofTrichantheragiganteainthediets.InclusionofTrichantheragiganteainthedietssignificantly(P0.05)increaseddailyaverageDMintakefrom51.4to73.6g,proteinintakefrom11.2to16.7g,growthratefrom12.8to18.2g/dandhotcarcassweightfrom1203to1301g,relativetothecontrol.Theaveragefeedconversionratiowasnotsignificantly(P0.05)influencedbythediets.Thedifferencesbetweensexesformostparameterswerenotsignificant(P0.05).Itwasconcludedthatlevelsupto27%ofTrichantheragiganteacouldbeincludedinthedietofgrowingrabbitstopromotefeedintakeandgrowthperformancewithoutinfluencingthefeedconversionefficiency..
