Threeexperimentsusing120day-oldbroilerchicks,werecarriedoutusingamethoddesignedtoevaluatequalityofproteinfromnon-conventionalsources,suchasaquaticplantsandleavesoftrees.Thisworkwasdoneattheseniorauthor'shomelocatedinCali(Colombia)fromJunetoAugustof1995.Theareais1000mabovesealevelwith24?Cdailymeantemperature,75%humidityand1000mmannualrainfall.Achickgrowthasayisanattractivebiologicaltestbecauseresultsareobtainedwithintwotothreeweeksaftergivingthetestprotein.Energysourcesfreeofproteinwereusedtoensurethatthegrowthresponsereflectedthequalityofthetestprotein.Theproteinsourcestobeevaluatedwereincludedatlevelsthatpermittedreplacementofbetween0and15%oftheproteininsoyabeanmeal.Thefirstexperimentcomparedabasaldietbasedoncerealswithoneinwhichtheenergysourcewasprovidedbyrawsugarandpalmoil;inbothdietstheproteinsourcewassoyabeanmeal.Intakeandgrowthonthesugar/oildietwerelow,comparedwiththecerealdiet(21vs.38g/dofintake;4vs.24g/dgrowth).Inthesubsequentexperimentscassavastarchwasincludedinthetestdiet(21%).Inthesecondexperimentthetreatmentswere0,10and15%replacementoftheproteinfromsoyabeanmealwithground,oven-driedleavesofTrichantheragigantea.Therewerenodifferencesinintake(1.49,1.43,1.5and1.51g/hour,respectively)noringrowthrate(0.39,0.36,0.45and0.36g/hour).InthethirdexperimentthetestproteinwasderivedfromAzollafiliculoidesincludedatthesamelevelsasinExperiment2.Therewerenodifferencesinintake(g/d)noringrowthrate(24.6,29.4,34.0g/d).Itisconcludedthat:(i)leafmealsfromTrichantheragiganteaandAzollafiliculoidescanreplaceupto15%oftheproteinnormallyderivedfromsoyabeanmealindietsofmonogastricanimals;(ii)thechickgrowthassaywithprotein-freeenergysourcesisanappropriatebiologicaltesttoassessthenutritionalvalueofpotentialprotein-richsupplements.
