Characterization of dairy cattle feeding systems in Algeria: impact on productive and reproductive performance

ThecurrentstudyaimedtoinvestigatetheexistingcattlefeedingsystemsinAlgeriaandtheimpactoffeedingmanagement,particularlytheconcentrateallocation,ondairycowmilkyieldandreproductiveperformance.Thestudywasconductedduring6monthswithatotalof240cowsinTizi-Ouzouarea(northofAlgeria).Accordingtotheconcentrateallocation,threefeedingsystemsweredefined:S1withaconstantconcentrateallocationwhateverthephysiologicalstage,S2withavariablequantityofconcentrateallocatedaccordingthestageoflactationandS3withconcentrateallocationaccordingtothestageoflactationandmilkproductionlevel.nbsp;Theresultsrevealedthatthemilkproductionwaslowerthanwhatallowedbythegeneticpotentialassociatedtoalteredreproductiveperformances.ComparedtoS1andS2,itwasobservedthatcowsinS3presentedsignificantlyhighermeanmilkyield(17.7±3.96kg)andreproductiveperformance(pregnancyrateatfirstinsemination(58.3%),lowdaystofirstservice(89.4±26.6)andshortopendays(105.9±31.7)].InS3,66.7%ofcowspresentedBCSvalueshigherthan2.75,apercentagedirectlyrelatedtothehighestsuccessatfirstinseminationinthisfeedingsystem.
