Leavesofsomesalt-toleranttreespecies(TamarixarticulataVahl.,Tamarixaphylla(L)Karst,AcaciaamplicepsMaslin,CasuarinaequisetifoliaL,ParkinsoniaaculeateL,EucaliptuscamaldulensisDahnhard)wereevaluatedintermsofmicrobialnitrogen(MN)andbiomass(MBM)productionafterincubationwithrumenfluidand15N-tracerfor96hintheabsenceorpresenceofpolyethyleneglycol(PEG,6000).Thecharacteristicsoffermentation(initialgasproducedfromsolublefraction;a,gasproductionduringincubationproducedfrominsolublebutfermentablefraction;b,potentialgasproduction;a+b,fractionalrateofgasproductionperhour;c,wereassessedusinganinvitroincubationtechniquewithrumenfluid.Effectivedegradability(ED)andshortchainfattyacids(SCFA)werealsoestimatedforleavesoftheexperimentaltreespecies.Thea+bvalues(mL/gDM)werehighest(P0.05)inA.ampliceps(191),lowestinT.articulateandC.equisetifolia(119),andintermediateinT.aphylla,E.camaldulensisandP.aculeate(158).E.camaldulensis,A.amplicepsandP.aculeatehadhigher(P0.05)fractionalrateofgasproduction(0.080/h)thanotherspecies(0.061/h).TherewasapositivecorrelationbetweenSCFAconcentrationsandcanda+bvalues.TheratiosofMNandMBMtoeffectivedegradedsubstrateandthevaluesofMNandMBMweresignificantlyhigher(P0.05)inP.aculeateandA.amplicepscomparedwithotherspecies.MicrobialnitrogenandMBMproductionwerepositivelycorrelatedwitha+b,EDandSCFA.TheadditionofPEGtotheplantsamplesincubatedwithrumenfluidataratioof2:1PEG:substrateincreasedthevaluesofgasproduction,characteristicsoffermentation,MN,MBM,SCFAandED.TheresponseofleavesoftheexperimentaltreespeciestoPEGtreatmentintermsofincreasedgasproductionvariedbetweenspeciesandtendedtodeclineasincubationprogressed,withthehighestincreaseduringthefirst30hofincubation.LeavesofP.aculeateandA.amplicepsgavehighestvaluesofmicrobialnitrogenandbiomassproductionandthereforemaybefoundusefulforsupplementation,invivooflowcrudeproteinforagediets.FeedingofPEGwithleavesoftreespeciescontaininghighlevelsoftanninscanbehelpfulbyincreasingtheeffectivedegradabilityofdrymatter.
