Effects of season and location on cattle milk produced and producer milk prices in selected villages of Tanga and Morogoro Regions, Tanzania

Thestudywasconductedin4villagesofKilosaandMvomerodistrictsinMorogoroRegionand4villagesofHandeniandLushotodistrictsinTangaRegion.Theaimwastocomparedifferencesincattlemilkproducedandmilkproducerpricesbasedonlocationandseasonsinthetworegions.ThestudyappliedtheFeedAssessmentTool(FEAST)forgatheringdatathroughfocusgroupdiscussionsandindividualinterviews.Dataonrainfallpatternthroughouttheyear,milkproducedperhouseholdperday,andmilkpricesreceivedinTanzanianShilling(TSh)perlitreweregathered.ThedailyamountofmilkproducedperhouseholdwasgreaterinHandeni(SE2.33)andKilosa(SE2.12)districtsthaninMvomero(SE3.09)andLushoto(SE2.24)districts,withanoverallrangeof0.25-53litres/household.Therewerealsodifferencesinmilkproducerprices,inMvomero(SD148),Lushoto(SD62.26),Kilosa(SD116.12)andHandeni(SD123)withanoverallrangeof200-1000TSh/litreofmilk.Seasonalityofrainfallhadeffectsonbothmilkproducedandmilkprices.Ontheotherhand,localfeedingsystemsinfluencedmilkproducedperhousehold,whilemarketingchannelsaffectedmilkprices.Moreresearchontheuseofinnovationapproachestoaddressissuesofpricesandseasonalmilksupply,aswellastraininganduseofimprovedforagetechnologywerepossibleoptionsrecommendedtoachieveayear-roundsimilarlevelofmilkproduction.
