Twoexperimentswerecarriedoutonfourfistulatedswampbuffaloestoevaluatelocalfeedresourcesusingtheinsaccomethodtostudydegradabilityandeffectsoftherumenenvironment.Promisingfeedsincluded:waterplants(duckweed,azolla,Eleocharisdulcis,BlyxaJavenicey,andSacciolepisindica),naturalgrasses(BbrachiariamuticaandPanicumrepens),legumetreeleaves(Sesbaniasesban,Sesbaniagrandiflora,andLeucaenaleucocephala),cropresiduesandagro-industrialby-products(ricestraw,sugarcanetops,maizestoverandpineapplepeel)andproteinandenergy-richsupplements(coconutandgroundnutcake,ricebran,brokenriceandmaize).TherumenenvironmentstudywasaLatinsquarearrangementwithfourdifferentdiets:ricestraw(RS),ricestrawandmolasses-ureacake(MUC),ricestraw,MUCandgrass(0.5%bodyweight),andricestrawandgrass(0.5%DMofbodyweight).Theresultsintheaboveorderofdietswere:ruminalNH3-N,9.17,13.7,12.3,10.2mg/100ml(SE=1.19,P=0.032);bacteriapopulation,0.84,1.01,1.07,0.98*109(SE=0.03,P=0.002);protozoapopulation2.49,3.03,3.38,2.84*105(SE=0.12,P=0.002).Feedintakewas96.0,99.0,113and109gDM/W0.75(SE=2.10,P=0.001),respectively.Therewasanindicationofimprovementinfeeddegradabilitywhenthericestrawwassupplementedwithmolasses-ureacakeandgrass.ItisconcludedthatthereisanabundanceoflocalfeedsavailableforbuffaloproductionintheMekongdeltaandthatsupplementationofricestrawwithmolasses-ureacakeandgrasshasbeneficialeffectsontherumenenvironmentofswampbuffaloes.
