An approach to the nutritional value for pigs of sweet potato vines (Ipomoea batatas (l.) lam)

Sun-driedsweetpotatovine(SPV)mealcontainedindrybasis(g/kg):234crudefibre,403NDF,328ADF,160detergentlignin,29.2N,216ashand158kj/10gDMgrossenergy.TheeffectoffeedingSPVonnutrientdigestibilitywasstudiedineitherileorectostomizedorintact45kgliveweightpigsfedgradedlevelsofSPV(0,100and200g/kginthedrydiet).SPVsignificantlydecreasedbothilealandfaecaldigestibilityofmostnutrients.EstimatedilealandfaecalcrudeproteindigestibilityofSPVmealwas22.1and54.1%whereasinvitroilealcrudeproteindigestibilityofSPVmealaccountedfor42.2%thusindicatingaratherlowavailabilityofcrudeproteininthisbiomass.Thecontributionofthelargeintestinetothedigestionofdietsrangedfrom19.7to20.8%ofenergydisappearanceintheentiredigestivetract.DailyilealandfaecaloutputofshortchainfattyacidsandammoniashowedatrendtobeproportionaltothelevelofSPVmealinthediet.AlowlevelofinclusionofSPVmealinthedietissuggestedinordertoavoidanegativeeffectonnutrientdigestibility.Methodstoimprovedigestionofthisbiomasscouldbeencouraged.
