An analysis of inbreeding levels and factors affecting growth and reproductive traits in the Kenya Alpine dairy goat

ThelevelofinbreedingoftheKenyaAlpinedairygoatwasinvestigatedbyuseofBrianKinghorn#8217;sPedigreeviewer?software.From1,067doerecords,dataonparentagewasextractedandthisresultedto3,516individualrecordsthatwereusedforcalculatingindividualinbreedingcoefficientsfortheperiod1999to2009.Therateofinbreeding(#916;F)wasestimatedasthedifferencebetweentheindividualinbreeding(Ft)andtheinbreedingoftheparents(Ft-1)dividedby(1-Ft-1).Theproportionofanimalsthatwasinbredincreasedfrom0.00(averageF=0)in1990to0.38in2009(averageF=0.012).Inbreedingdepressiononbodyweightwassignificant(P0.05).Ingeneralthelevelofinbreedinginthispopulationwasverylow.Furtherinvestigationonthebirthweightandweaningweightwascarriedout.Regressionanalysisindicatedthatbirthweight(p0.05)andweaningweight(p0.01)hadimprovedininbreds.Thedecreaseinweightatfirstserviceandatfirstkiddingwasstatisticallyinsignificant.Kiddingintervalincreased(p0.01)duetoinbreeding.Rateofdeclineinweightatfirstserviceandatfirstkidding,wasdifferentfromzero(p0.01).EffectofinbreedingongrowthandreproductivetraitsinKenyaAlpinegoatswasnotverypronouncedintheflock.nbsp;
