Thisstudywasconductedtoinvestigatetheeffectsofdefaunationincattlereceiveddifferentsourcesofcarbohydrate.Thehypothesistobetestedwasthatgrowthresponsesofcattletoadrenchofsoybeanoilwouldbegreaterinthedietbasedonmolassescomparedwithricestraw.Experimentaldesignfolloweda3*2factorialarrangementofthreebasaldietsandwithorwithoutanoildrenchat6ml/kgliveweight(LW).IndividualtreatmentswereMGU(30%molasses+70%grass+50gurea/100kgLW),RGU(50%ricestraw+50%grass+50gurea/100kgLW)andRGR(45%ricestraw+45%grass+10%ricebran).Thirtygrowingcattleof132-144kgwereallocatedto6treatments(5replicatespertreatment)andthetriallastedfor90days.Intakeswereaffectedinthefirst30daysafteroildrench,butoverthewholeperiodthesevaluesweresimilarindefaunatedandfaunatedcattle.However,amongrations,molassessupplementationhasprovidedasignificantlyhigherDMintake(p0.01).Changesinliveweightofcattlewerenotstatisticallydifferentalthoughattheendoftheexperiment,cattlereceivedoiltendedtogrowthfasterthantheothergroup(p=0.07).Dietsandoildrenchhadstrongeffectsondailyweightgainofcattle(p0.01)withhighestaveragedailygain(p0.01)ontreatmentMGU.Nevertheless,duetoahighproportionofmolassesinthediet,thecostofMGUtreatmentwashighercomparedtotheothertwotreatments.Thedietwithinclusionofricestrawandurea(RGU)offeredalowestcostandthusgreaterbenefitwasfoundinthisgroup.Inconclusion,theintroducedsystemoffeedinggrasswithricestrawandureasupplementwithanoildrenchresultedinmorefinancialprofitstothefarmersthanthesystemnormallypracticed.
