Responses of growing beef cattle to a feeding regime combining road side grazing and rice straw feeding supplemented with urea and brewers' grains following an oil drench

Aparticipatoryfeedingtrialongrowingcrossbredcattle(LaiSin)wasorganizedtotestapilotfeedingregimebasedonroadsidegrazingandricestrawsupplementedwithureaandbrewers'grainsfollowinganoildrench.TwentycattleraisingfarmersinthecountrysideofHanoiwereselectedfortheparticipatoryfeedingtrialinthewinter-springperiod.Halfofthefarmersgrewtheircattleasnormallypracticedtoformthecontrolgroup.Theothertenfarmersfedtheircattlewithricestrawadlibitumplus4hourroadsidegrazing/daysupplementedwith2kgfreshbrewers'grains/head/day.Theexperimentalcattleweredrenchedwithcookingoilatarateof5ml/kglive-weight.Thetriallastedfor3monthsaftera15-dayadaptationperiod.Resultsshowedthattheexperimentalcattleconsumedmorericestraw(1.85vs1.17kgDM/head/day)andgrewfaster(408vs245g/head/day).Asaresult,theintroducedfeedingregimeusingbrewers'grainsandanoildrenchresultedinmorefinancialprofittothefarmerthanthesystemnormallypracticed.
