Thephysicalandchemicalcompositionsofthecropcontentsandchemicalcompositionofgizzardcontentsoftwotypesofscavengingchickenwereassessedinthisstudy.Atotalof100indigenousscavengingchickens(layersandgrowers),collectedfromruralfarmersinRangpur,anortherndistrictofBangladesh,wereslaughtered,theircropsandgizzardsdissected,andthecropcontentswerephysicallyanalysed.Sundriedcropandgizzardcontentswerethensubjectedtochemicalanalyses.Twenty-fivegrowersandtwenty-fivelayerswereslaughteredineachoftwoseasonsi.e.non-harvestingandharvestingseason.Cerealgrains,kitchenwastesandgreenforageswerethemaincropcontents,andthecompositionvariedwithseasonandthetypeofbird.Theaverageweightofoven-driedcropcontentswas20.1#177;4.9gforlayersand13.5#177;2.5gforgrowers.Theaveragedrymatter(DM)percentageofcropcontentswas47.8#177;7.5.Theoverallmeanchemicalcompositions(%ofDM)ofthecropcontentswere:10.5#177;2.2crudeprotein(CP),2.1#177;1.5etherextract(EE),6.4#177;3.5crudefibre(CF),12.5#177;7.8crudeash,68.7#177;8.6nitrogen-free-extract(NFE),0.96#177;0.67calcium(Ca)and0.38#177;0.18phosphorus(P),andthecalculatedmetabolisableenergy(ME)was2747#177;419kcal/kg.TheCPofgizzardcontentswas7.3#177;1.9%ofDM.DM,EEandCFcontentsvariedsignificantly(P0.01)withseason,butcontentsofCP,crudeash,NFE,Ca,PandMEwerenotinfluencedbyseason.CP,CaandPcontentsweresignificantlyhigher(P0.01)inlayersthaningrowers,conversely,growersshowedhigherDMcontentsofthecrop(P0.05)thanlayers,butothernutrientsdidnotdifferamongtypeofbirds.TheaminoacidprofilesincropcontentswerebelowtheNRC(1994)recommendedlevelsforproductionandgrowthofchickens.Thenutrientconcentrationsoffeedsscavengedbyindigenouschickenswerelessthantherecommendednutritionallevels(NRC1994),whichvariedwithseasonandtypeofbird.
