Anexperimentwascarriedouttoinvestigatetheuseoffermentedfishorjackfruit,togetherwithpigmanure,assubstratesforproductionoflarvae,andtodetermineiftherewereadvantagesinaddingbiodigestereffluenttothesubstrates.Theexperimentwasa2*4arrangement,thefactorsbeing:Substrate(fermentedfishwaste+pigmanureorJackfruitwaste+pigmanure)andBiodigestereffluent(applicationof100,150,200or250mgN/m2ofsubstratesurface).Therewere2replicatesofeachtreatmentinacompletelyrandomizeddesign.Thesubstrateswereputinbrick-linedenclosureswithfloorareaof0.25m#178;.Thesubstrateswererapidlycolonizedbyhouseflies(Moscaspp)andthelarvaeappearedwithin20to24hoursafterintroducingthesubstrates.Sixdaysafterintroducingthesubstrates,thelarvaewereharvestedbyimmersingthesubstratesinwater,andcollectingthelarvaewhichremainedfloatingonthewatersurface.Theproductionoflarvaewashigheronthesubstratewithfishwastethanonthefruitwaste.Therewasnoeffectofthelevelofeffluentandnointeractionbetweensubstrateandeffluent.Conversionrateswerebetterforthesubstrateswithfermentedfish:9kgwasteDMto1kglarvalDMand3.5kgcrudeproteininthewasteto1kgofproteininthelarvae.ItisconcludedthatpigmanuremixedwithfermentedfishwasteisabettersubstrateforgrowinglarvaethanJackfruitwasteandpigmanure.Thereappearedtobenoadvantagesfromapplyingbiodigestereffluenttothesubstrates.
