Effects of mixtures of coconut and palm kernel oil on the rumen fermentation parameters and microbial population of cattle

Thestudyevaluatedtheeffectsofcoconutoilandpalmkerneloilratiosontherumenfermentationparametersandmicrobialpopulationofcattle.Theexperimenttestedtheeffectsoffourlevelsofcoconut:palmkerneloil(CNO-PKO)ratios(0:0g/day,100:50g/day,50:100g/dayand75:75g/day)ontwelveWhiteFulanicattleoveraperiodoftwelveweeks.Alltheexperimentsweresetoutinacompletelyrandomiseddesign.Dataincludingrumentemperature,rumenpH,volatilefattyacids(VFA),ammonianitrogenandrumenmicrobialpopulationwerecollectedandanalysedusingone-wayanalysisofvariance.IncreasedsupplementationofCNO-PKOfrom0:0g/dayto75:75g/dayincreasedVFAfrom2.52mMto4.31Mmwhileprotozoapopulationwasreducedfrom756FEC/gto0.00FEC/grespectively.Inconclusion,CNO-PKOat75:75g/dayincreasedtotalvolatilefattyacidsandpropionateproportionwhileprotozoapopulationwasreduced.
