Characterization of the dairy cattle in Algeria: the case of Fréha area in Tizi-Ouzou

ThisworkfocusesonthestructuralandfunctionalcharacterizationofdairycattlefarmsinAlgeria.Fréhaarea(Tizi-Ouzou),wheredairyfarmingisdeveloped,wasselectedasstudyarea.Thetypologyemergingfromtheresultsobtainedbyasurveyconductedin32farmsin2014,highlightedfourgroupsoffarms.ThesediffermainlyintermsofUAS(UsefulAgriculturalSurface)used,cowsnumberandvolumeofdailymilksales.Farmsoperate,onaverage,11±9UAShectares;theaveragesizeoffarmsisabout8±5cows.Thelatterreceiveonaveragewithoutrationing,9±3kgconcentratedfoodandproduceanaverageof15±5litersofmilkperday.Thelackoffodderareas(10hectaresfor8cows)provestheconstraintaffectingthemilkproduction.Thisisofgrowingimportanceinthecontextofgovernmentincentivestoincreasethedairycattlesize.Thecowfeedneedsaremainlycoveredbytheconcentratedfoods.Inthiscontext,withdeficiencyingreenfodderareasandthehighuseofconcentratedfeed,cowproductivitypaintodevelop.
