Gender ownership patterns of livestock in Botswana

ThispaperexaminesgenderownershippatternsoflivestockinBotswana.ThisispredicatedonthefactthatthereisneedforempiricalanalysisofwomenownershipoflivestockandthatinterventionforagriculturaldevelopmentsuchasArableLandsDevelopmentProjectisbeingsubjectedtolivestockownership.SecondarydatawereusedforthisstudyandwerecompiledfromtheAgriculturalcensusandstatisticsgeneratedbytheMinistryofAgriculturein2007.DataweresubjectedtoanalysiswiththeSPSS13,usingproportions,ratios,t-testandonewayanalysisofvariancetoshowifsignificantdifferencesexistintheownershipoflivestockamongfemalefarmers.nbsp;Resultsshowthatwomenaremostprominentingoatownershipandtheratioofmaletofemaleownershipofcattleholdingsis3to1buttheratioofpopulationofanimalsownedbymaletofemaleis5to1.Intermsofownershipacrosslocationintheregions,womeninCentralregionownmorecattle,goats,sheep,donkeyandchickenthanotherregions,whilewomeninMaunregionownmorehorsesthanothersandwomeninGaboroneregionownmorepigsthanothers.Generally,CentralandSouthernregionsaremoreprominentforcattle,sheep,donkeyandchickenownership.Significantdifferencesexistbetweenmaleandfemaleownershipofcattle,goats,sheep,donkeyandhorses.However,nosignificantdifferenceexistsbetweenmaleandfemaleintermsofownershipofchickenandpigs.One-wayanalysisofvariancetoshowthatasignificantdifferenceexistsacrossregionsamongwomenintermsoflivestockownership(F=9.28,p0.05)withgoatownershiphavingthehighestmeanscore(33099.67).nbsp;Itisthereforeimportantthattheseownershippatternsaregivenproperconsiderationinpolicyformulationforlivestockdevelopmentandthatthroughownershippatterns,locationspecificinterventionscouldbeimplemented.
