ThisstudywasconductedtoevaluatethepossiblegeneticresistanceofexoticandindigenouschickstoSalmonellaenteritidis.Atotalof729weeksoldchickswereforthisstudywhichincludetheFulaniecotype(FSF),Yorubaecotype(YSF),andtheExoticbreed(BlackNeracockerel).Chickswereinfectedwith3.8x104CFUofS.enteritidisandwereobservedfor16days.Evaluationofpossiblegeneticresistancewasbasedonclinicalsigns,mortalityanddifferentialleukocytescountofinfectedchicks.Clinicalsignswereevidentonday3witheightythreepercent(83.3%)ofthechicksshowingsevereclinicalsignsonday8postinfection.Theexoticbreedhadthemostprolongedclinicalsignswithallthechicksshowingsevereclinicalsigns.Yorubaecotypehadtheshortesttimingfortheclinicalsigns,with62.5%oftheYorubaecotypeaffected.87.5%oftheFulaniecotypeand98%oftheexoticbreedwereaffected.NomortalitywasrecordedwiththechicksinfectedwithS.enteritidis.AssessingtheclinicalsignsobservedfrominfectedchicksrevealedthatYorubaecotypeistheleastsusceptible.TheresultfromthestudyalsoindicatedthattheexoticismoresusceptibletoSalmonellainfectionthantheindigenouschicks.ItalsorevealedthatwithintheecotypesinNigeria,FulaniecotypeismoresusceptibletoSalmonellainfectionthantheYorubaecotype.ThedifferentialsusceptibilityandthelowmortalityobservedinYorubaecotypeindicatedprobablegeneticresistancetoS.enteritidis
