Transition of smallholder dairy farming system - a micro study in Tamil Nadu, India

CropanddairymixedfarmingisdominantformofmilkproductionactivitiesinIndia.Itisanimportantlivelihoodoptionsforthevulnerablesectionsnamelylandless,smallandmarginalfarmerwhoformsmajorstakeholderinthesmallholderdairy.Introductionofnewpoliciesfacilitatedprivatesectorparticipationthroughverticalintegrationindairysector.Thepopulationgrowth,migrationofruraltourban,increasingdisposalincomeandchangingconsumerpatternwereincreasingthedemandforvariousdairyproductsinthemarket.Newpoliciesandincreasingdemandwereanticipatedtoprovideopportunitiesandintensificationinsmallholderlivestockproduction.Expostfactoresearchdesignwasadoptedforunderstandingopportunitiesandintensificationinsmallholderdairying.nbsp;Thestudyfoundthattheemergingopportunitieswerenotstrongenoughtoretaintheyouthandincreasingdemandfordairyproductspushingthe#8220;traditionalcrop-dairyintegratedmodeofdairying#8221;to#8220;moderateintensivefarming#8221;withreplacementofmilchanimalstock,feedresources,mechanizationandwithminimaldependenceofanimalpowertraction.
