Status quo of institutional financial services to smallholder dairy farming of Tamil Nadu, India – A case study

FormillionsofhouseholdsinruralIndia,smallholderdairyingisoneoftheimportantlivelihoodoptions.Thishasbeenidentifiedasoneofthetooltomoveoutfrompoverty.Thussustainingsmallholderfarmerindairyingprofessionbecomesmandate.Forthis,widerangesofsupportecosystem,includingfinancialservicesareessential.ThisstudymakesanattempttounderstandthestatusoffinancialservicesofsmallholderdairyfarmersinTamilNadu,Indiathroughdirectinterviewof410dairyfarmers.Thisstudyfoundthatthereachabilityofinstitutionalfinancialserviceswerelimited.Evenafterentryofprivatebanks,microfinancialinstitutionstotheexistingpoolofinstitutionalfinancialserviceproviders(publicsectorandco-operativebanks)inthepostliberationera,noninstitutionallenderssuchasmilkvendorsandagentsandmoneylendershavesubstantialrolesinprovidingcredittodairyingwithhighinterestrates.
