GIS application in poultry production: identification of layers as the major commercial product of the poultry sector in Nigeria

ThisstudyaimedtoidentifythechickenproductioncapacityofNigeriathroughanintensivesurveyofallpoultryfarmswhicharetheprimarysourcesofanypoultrydata.InNigeria,therearetwoseparatepoultryproductionsystems:commercialandrural.Thecommercialsystemisessentiallycharacterizedbysmalltolarge-scaleproduction.Chickenconstitutesabout90%ofthepoultrypopulationinNigeria.GISanalysisshowedchickenproductionas:Broilers15.2%,Breeders6.77%,Layers75.3%andCockerels2.73%.TheapplicationofGeographicalInformationSys-tem(GIS)revealedthatpoultrykeepingingeneralandeggproductioninparticularwerediscoveredtobederivedbyrearinglayerswhichisessentialforbothdietaryandeconomicreasons.
