Characterization of bee-keeping systems and honey marketing in Eastern zone Tigray, Ethiopia

ThestudywasconductedinKilteAwlaeloDistrict(KAD),EasternZoneofTigray,Ethiopiatocharacterizebeekeepingsystemsandhoneymarketing.nbsp;Fromtheinterviewedbeekeepers4.50%and14.5%ownonlytraditionalbeehiveandbothtraditionalandframedbeehive,respectively.About95.5%ofthebeekeepersownframedhivewithanaveragenumberof6.39hive/hhandinaverageproduce19.4kg/hive/harvest.Majorityofthebeekeepersinspecttheapiaryandcolonieseverydayandfewofthem(1.90%)yearlyatthetimeofhoneyharvest.Themajorityofthebeekeepers(85.3%)selltheirhoneyatalocalmarket.Morethanhalfofthebeekeepers(51.30%)storetheirhoneyinplasticpot,tinecane,glassandclaypot.Fromthisstudyitwasrealizedthat,thereisapotentialofhoneybeeproductioninthedistrictanditisdominatedbyframedhive(modern)productionsystem.Thiscallsforproperinterventionalongthevaluechaincomponentsandactors,andinvolveshugeinvestmentinthedevelopmentofhoneyproduction,processingandexport.
