Effect of dried cassava peelings on the rumen environment of cattle fed natural grasses

FourLaiSindbulls(26-28monthsofageand290kgaverageliveweightwithpermanentrumencannulaswerefedabasaldietofnaturalgrassandlevelsofnbsp;driedcassavarootpeelings(RP)of:0,0.25,0.50and0.75kgDMper100kgLW.Thesetreatmentswereappliedaccordingtoa4*4LatinSquarearrangementwithperiodsof30daysoneachtreatment.nbsp;IncreasingtheofferofRPresultedin:reducedintakeofthegrassbutincreasedoverallintakeofDM;areducedconcentrationofrumenammoniawithminimaleffectsonrumenpH;anincreaseintherumenprotozoalpopulationbutareductioninthatofbacteria;adecreaseintherumendegradabilityofgrassDMwithminimaleffectsonthedegradabilityofthecassavarootpeelings.nbsp;Despitetheapparentlynegativeeffectsonthebalanceofrumenbacteriaandprotozoa,theoverallimpactoftheRPsupplementationappearedtobeabetterbalanceofnutrientstotheanimalasreflectedinthelinearnbsp;increaseintotalDMintake.
