Survey of the production, processing and nutritive value of catfish by-product meals in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam

Aformalsurveybasedonasemi-structuredquestionnairewasconductedamongcatfishfarmers,andcatfishandcatfishby-productprocessingcompaniesinfiveprovinces(CanTho,AnGiang,DongThap,VinhLongandTienGiang)intheMekongDeltaofVietnam.Samplesofmealsweretakenforanalysisofchemicalcomposition,includingcrudeprotein(CP),etherextract(EE),crudefibre(CF),ash,aminoacids,fattyacids,andminerals.TheresultsshowthatmostcatfishfarmerswerechangingtoraisingcatfishinpondsandintheDangQuangsystem,whichisfoundalongtheHauandTienRivers,whileraisingTracatfishinfloatingcageswasdecreasingbecauseofhighercosts.Theamountofcatfishby-productproducedintheMekongDeltaisaround710tonnes/day,ofwhich53%isdriedcatfishmealforanimalfeed,42%iswetfishmealforaquaculture,andaround5%isforhumanconsumption.Thecatfishby-productmealswerefoundtobehighinfat(10-33%EE)andcalcium(4-13%),whiletheCPcontentinheadandboneby-productmealswasratherlow(35-42%).Thebrokenmeatandskinby-productmealshadrelativelyhighCPcontent(45-62%),agoodbalanceofessentialaminoacids,andwerehighinlysine(5.45-9.33%ofDM).
