Alternative feedstuffs for broilers in Cameroon

nbsp;Feedcostsamounttoabout70%ofthetotalproductioncostsofbroilermeat.InCameroon,themajoringredientsofbroilerfeedsaremaizeandimportedproteinconcentratesbasedonsoybeanconcentrate,fishand/oranimalmeals.Overthepastfewyearsthefeedcostshaveincreasedbecausethepriceoflocallyproducedmaizeisgoingupandbecausetheuseofanimalmealshasbeenprohibited.Thispaperdescribestheuseofpossiblealternativefeedstuffs.nbsp;Itisconcludedthattherearelocallyproduced,potentialalternativefeedstuffs,butinordertosustainbroilerproductionathighinclusionlevels,moreresearchisnecessarytocharacterizethesefeedstuffsastotheirdigestibility,aminoacidprofileandcontentsofanti-nutritionalfactors.Inaddition,methodsapplicableonsmall-holderfarmsshouldbedevelopedtoproperlytreatthealternativefeedstuffssoastoimprovetheirnutritionalvalue.
