Comparative study on egg production and feed efficiency of different breeds of poultry under intensive and rural conditions in Bangladesh

TwoexperimentswereconductedtocomparetheeggproductionofRhodeIslandRed,BarredPlymouthRockandIndigenous(Desi)breedsofpoultryinintensiveandtraditionalruralsystemsofrearing.Intheintensivesystem270pullets,16weeksofageweredistributedinfloorpenswith3replicationsof30birdseach.Inthetraditionalruralsystem180pulletsoftheabovethreebreedsatthesameageweredistributedtovillagefarmersinadesignallocating20pulletstoeachfarmerwith3replicationsperbreed.Intheintensivesystemthepulletsreceivedabalanceddietandinthevillageafter4weeksofadaptationbygraduallyreducingtheamountofbalancedfeedthepulletswererearedinthetraditionalscavengingsystem.Datawerecollecteduptotheageof50weeks.Theresultsindicateasignificantdifference(P0.05)ineggproductionbetweenthebreedsintheintensivesystemofrearing.Eggproductionofthethreebreedsdidnotdiffersignificantly(P0.05)inthetraditionalruralsystemofrearing.Eggweightfortheexoticbreedswas72%higherthanfortheindigenousbreed.Intheintensivesystem,theRhodeIslandRed,BarredPlymouthRockandIndigenous(Desi)hensconsumedfeedequivalenttoabout75eggsperbird,leavingagrossprofitof167,35andalossof66Taka(1US$=25Taka)perbirdforthethreebreedsrespectively.Ontheotherhand,inthetraditionalruralsystemthesethreebreedsproduced69,53and29eggsrespectivelywithoutanyfeedcostandthenetincomewastherefore139,106and58Taka/birdforthethreebreedsrespectively.
