Impacts of policy reforms on the livestock industry in Kenya: The case of the dairy sector

ThisarticleanalysestheimpactofliberalizationonthedairyindustryinKenya.Muchdebateragesovertheeffectsofthispolicy.Thisdebateis,however,notwellinformed;itlacksrecentstudiestoshoweventsandprocessestakingplacefromthefarmertotheconsumer,thatinformwhetherthepolicychangeshavehadtheintendedeffects.nbsp;Theresultsindicatethatmilkproductionanddairyherdproductivityhavereducedorremainedlow,onaverage.Foodsecuritywithrespecttomilkhasreducedfromapositionofsufficiencytothatofinsufficiency.Priceshaveimprovedslightlybecauseofincreasedcompetition,leadingtoastabilizationofmilksupplyfromyeartoyear.Dairycapitalstockintheformofprocessingplantshasincreasedbutisunderutilizedbecauseofreducedmilkdeliveriesasaresultofanupsurgeofsmalltradersthatoffermorecompetitiveprices.Thenegativeimpactsofliberalizationpoliciesaremainlyattributedtotheunsynchronizedmannerinwhichtheywereintroduced.
