Market potential for the local Djallonké goat in Southern Benin: empirical evidence from two rural markets

Amarketstudywasundertakentoexaminetheeffectsofselectedqualitativeandquantitativetraitsofgoatsontheirmarketprice.Dataonbreedtype,sex,coatcolor,age,healthandlivebodyweightwererecordedfrom288goatstradedintworuralmarketsinSouthernBenin.Buyerswerequestionedaboutthepurposeforwhicheachanimalwasbought.Adoublelogarithmichedonicmodelwasappliedtolinkpricestotheanimal#8217;sphysicalattributes.nbsp;Theresultsindicatedthatliveweightandsexweresignificant(p0.001)characteristicsaffectingprices.Theestimatedelasticityofdemandforgoatswithrespecttoliveweightwas0.99.Giventhesignificantpremiumassociatedwiththesecharacteristics,goatkeeperscouldsignificantlyimprovetheirprofitabilitythroughtheadoptionofappropriatemanagementandmarketingpractices.nbsp;TheresultsprovideanempiricalevidenceofthehighmarketpotentialofthelocalDjallonkégoat.
