:Anexperimenttoassesstheeffectofprocessingoftwovarietiesoftapioca(ManihotesculentaCrantz)leavesviz.WhiteRose(H226)andMulluvaadi(MVD-1)onchemicalandHCNcompositionwasconducted.Theproximateprinciplesoftheleavesofboththevarietiescollectedfromsixdifferentfieldswerecomparabletothatoflucerne.Thecrudeproteincontentof20.2and20.7%indrymatter(DM)wasrecordedforWhiteRose(H226)andMulluvaadi(MVD-1),respectively.Itwasalsoobservedthatthetapiocaleaveshadlessstructuralcarbohydratesthanlucerne.Thecrudefibreandneutraldetergentfibrecontentvariedbetweenvarieties.TheWhiteRose(H226)hadsignificantlyhigher(P0.05)crudefibre(20.6%)andneutraldetergentfibre(48.3%)thanMulluvadi(MVD-1)containing14.7%and42.7%respectively.Themineralprofileofleavesofboththevarietieswerewellabovethecriticallevel.However,awideCalcium:Phosphorusratio9.12:1and9.19:1wereobservedinbothWhiteRose(H226)andMulluvaadi(MVD-1),respectivelywhichissuggestiveoftheneedtosupplementaphosphorussourcealongwithtapiocaleaves.TapiocaleavescontainedhighlevelofHCN1934mg/kgDM(WhiteRose(H226)and1143mg/kgDM(Mulluvaadi(MVD-1)).Wiltingfor24hoursreducedHCNlevelto193mg/kgDMforboththevarietieswithWhiteRose(H226)decreasingtheHCNcontentmorerapidlythanMulluvaadi(MVD-1)whichissuggestiveofshorterdurationforwiltingofWhiteRose(H226)overMulluvaadi(MVD-1).Goodhayandgoodsilagecouldbepreparedfromtapiocaleavesofbothvarieties.WhileHCN(mg/kgDM)contentofWhiteRose(H226)silage(51.8)wassignificantly(P0.01)lowerthanMulluvaadi(MVD-1)silage(81.7),thehaymadefromMulluvaadi(MVD-1)hadsignificantly(P0.01)lower(72.4)HCNcontentthanWhiteRose(H226)hay(106.77)suggestiveofWhiteRose(H226)suitabilityforensilingandMulluvaadi(MVD-1)suitabilityforhaymaking.
