Flock size and egg production performance of backyard chicken reared by rural woman in Peshawar, Pakistan

Astudywasconductedduringtheyear2000toinvestigateflocksizeandeggproductionperformanceofbackyardchickenmaintainedbywomaninruralareasofPeshawar,NWFP,Pakistan.Onehundredandthirtyfemalefarmerswereselectedatrandomfrom13randomlyselectednearbyvillagesofPeshawarcity.AverageflocksizemaintainedbyahouseholdinruralareasofPeshawarwas26.1±0.69chickenwithahighernumberofadultbirds(14.5#177;0.50)thanchicks(11.6#177;0.41).Fewerchickenswasfoundinflocksgivennohousingfacility(24.3#177;1.02)thanthosegivenparttimehousingfacility(29.4#177;0.85).nbsp;Highernumberofchickens/householdwasfoundwithflockownersvaccinatingtheirchickenagainstND+Fowl-poxthanthosenotvaccinatingtheirchickenagainstthesediseases.nbsp;nbsp;Ontheaverage2315#177;66.2eggswereobtainedbyahousehold.Eggproduction/birdirrespectiveofthebreedwasfoundtobe142#177;3.17eggs.Ofthetotaleggsproduced,703#177;23.8eggswereconsumedbythehouseholdonannualbasis.MoreeggsperbirdwereproducedbyRhodeIslandRed(RIR)nbsp;thanDesichicken.Flocksgivenaparttimehousingfacilityproducedmoreeggs/birdthanthosegivennohousing.Flocksrearedinnormalhumandwellingsalsoproducedhighernumberofeggsperbirdthanthosegivennohousing.Moreeggs/birdwereobtainedfromflocksvaccinatedagainstND+fowl-poxdiseasethannon-vaccinatedflocks.nbsp;RIRproducedhighernumberofeggs/birdunderscavengingconditionsthandesi,FayumiandWhiteLeghornchickens.Effectivehealthcoverage,housingfacilitiesandrearingofhighlyproductivechickenwillimprovebackyardchickenproductioninruralareasofPeshawar.
