An approach to the estimation of washing losses in leaves of tropical trees

Washinglossesofdrymatter(WL)weredeterminedinsamplesofleavesfrom9differenttropicaltreesandshrubslocallyavailableeitherinfreshorsun-driedbasis,during30,60,90and120mininfoursuccessivecyclesof30mineachinasemi-automaticwashingmachine.Asignificanteffect(P0.001)oftimeontheWLoftheleaveswasobserved.Thelowestvalueswererecordedfor30and60min.TherewasnodifferenceinWLofleaveswashedduring90and120min.TheregressionanalysisdidnotrevealdifferencesinpredictedWLat0minwhenlinearandquadraticequationswerefittedtothedata(overallmeans,21.0and19.5%forlinearandquadraticequations,respectively).TheWLoffreshleaveswassignificantlylower(P0.001)thanthecorrespondingvalueforsun-driedsamples(22.2and30.6%,respectively).Ninetyminofwashingissuggestedforleavesfromthetreesevaluatedinthisstudy.
