The comparison of hand and machine milking on small family dairy farms in central Croatia

Theobjectiveofthisshortexperimentwastodeterminetheeffectoftwodifferentmilkingmethods(handvs.machinemilking)onmilkyield,milkingtime,milkcomposition,somatic-cell-countandmicroorganismsinmilk.Milksampleswerecollectedduringone-monthperiodfromtensmallfamilyfarmslocatedincentralCroatia.nbsp;Theaveragemilkyieldpermilkingwassignificantlyhigher(5.06vs.3.69L,P0.05)andmilkingtimewassignificantlyshorter(4.42vs.6.05min,P0.05)atmachinethanhandmilking.Differencesinmilkcomposition(fat,proteinandlactosecontents)atdifferentmilkingmethodswerenotsignificant.AveragevalueofSCCwasmuchhigher(65%)inmilkfromhandmilkedthanmachinemilkedcows,butdifferencewasnotsignificantduetothegreatvarianceofthevalues.Averagevalueofmicroorganismswassignificantlyhigher(P0.05)inmilkfromhandmilkedcows.nbsp;TheresultsshowedthatintroducingofmachinemilkinginsteadofhandmilkingcanimprovedthehygienicqualityofmilkandincreasedtheworkefficiencyonsmallfamilyfarmsinCroatia.
