On farm assessment of nutritional status of lactating cattle and buffaloes in urban, periurban and rural areas of Middle Gangetic Plains

DataonfeedingpracticesandnutritionalstatusoflactatingcattleandbuffaloesweregatheredfromUP-9regionofMiddleGangeticPlainsofIndia.Atotalof150farmerswereselectedasperstratifiedrandomizeddesign(SRD)fromurban,periurbanandruralareas.Nutritionalstatusoflactatingcattleandbuffaloeswasascertainedthroughdatacollectedaboutbodyweight,milkyieldandfeedintakeaswellasfromserummetabolicprofile.nbsp;Cattleofurbanareawereheavier(P0.05)thanruralarea,whilebuffaloesofbothurbanaswellasperiurbanareawereheavier(P0.05)thanruralarea.Themilkyieldofbothcattleandbuffaloesweresignificantly(P0.05)higherinurbanandperiurbanareathanruralarea.Inurbanareamostofthefarmersmaintainedtheiranimalsonwheatstrawandconcentratepurchasedfromlocalmarketwhileinperi-urbanareainadditiontothis,availablegreenfodderwasalsofed.However,animalsofruralareaweremaintainedoncropresiduesandavailablegreenfodderand/orlocalgrassesalongwithverylowamountofhomemadeconcentrates.Ingeneral,dairyanimalsweredeficientinDMintakeandthedeficiencyofCPandTDNwassignificantly(P0.05)higherinurbanareathanperiurbanandruralareas.Amongbloodbiochemicalparameters,theserumglucose,totalprotein,albumin,globulin,ureanitrogenandcholesterolwasfoundwithinthenormalrangeanddidnotvarysignificantly(P0.05)betweenareas.Serumureaconcentrationwashigherandcholesterolconcentrationwaslowerinbuffaloesthanthatofcattle.nbsp;Thus,itisconcludedthatthedairyanimalsinMiddleGangeticPlainwerefedwithtraditionalmannerandtheyweredeficientinDM,CPandTDNsupply.
