Agriculturalandagro-industrialby-productsareofimportanceinanimalproductionbecausetheydonotcompetewithhumanfood.Thesefeedstuffscanplayanimportantroleinprovidingfodderforruminantsindevelopingcountries.Inthiscontext,theobjectiveofthisworkistocharacterisetheinvitrofermentationcontributionofbothsolubleandinsolublefractions,andtheruminalactivitypromotedinsheep(Ouled-Djellalbreed)andgoat(Arbiabreed)bydatepalmleaves,collectedfromoldpalmtrees,incomparisonwithAristidapungens(localnamedrinn:aridgramineousplantharvestedatmaturitystage)andvetch-oathayusingthegasproductiontechniqueAhigherdigestivecapacityhasbeenfoundingoatincomparisonwithsheep.Forbothanimalspecies,thethreesubstratesshowedsignificant(P0.05)differencesconcerning96hinvitrogasproductionandrateofgasproduction.Allwashedsamplesshowedlossesofsolublematerial.Ingeneral,datepalmleaveshadthegreatestwashinglossandvetch-oathaythelowest.Thegasproductionwas,ingeneral,significantly(P0.05)higherfortheunwashedsubstrates.Vetch-oathaygavethehighestvaluesofgasproduction,Aristidapungensanddatepalmleavesthelowest.Furthermore,thegasproductionoftheinsolublefractionofvetch-oathaywashigherthanthatoftheotherforages.Itseemsthatthefermentationofdatepalmleavesinsolublefraction(washedsubstrate)ismoredegradablethantheunwashedones.Thisindicatesthatthisfeedstuffcontainssomerumenmicrofloraantagonisticsubstanceswhichareremovedbywashing.Theratedegradationofthethreewashedsamplesislowerthanitsunwashedones.Thefermentationoftheseforagesrequiresamoreelevatedlatencyphase.Theseresultsindicatethatthewashingofdatepalmleavesimprovestheirinvitrofermentationbytheruminalmicroflora.Thissituationcanbeduetothedissolutionoftheanti-microbialfactorsduringwashingprocedure.Inthisfact,datepalmleavescouldbeusedasanalternativeinruminantrationsinthearidzonestakingintoaccounttheruminalmicrofloraantagonisticfactors.
