Rumendegradability,invivodigestibilityandintakestudieswereundertakentoevaluatethepotentialofLeucaenaleucocephala,Albizialebbeck,MoringaoleiferaandGliricidiasepiumleafmealscomparedwithcottonseedcakeasproteinsourcesforgoats.Inarumendrymatter(DM)andcrudeprotein(CP)degradabilitystudy,hominymeal(HM),maizestover(MS),andisonitrogenousconcentrates(220gCP/kgDM)basedonLeucaena(LBC),Albizia(ABC),Moringa(MBC),Gliricidia(GBC)orcottonseedcake(CSC)wereusedinnylonbags,wereinsertedintotherumensof4fistulatedheifersandremovedafter2to96hours.Inaninvivodigestibilitystudy,20goatswerefedadlibitummaizestover,supplementedwitheitheroftheLBC,ABC,MBC,GBCorCSCconcentrates.Thereweredifferences(P0.05)inDMandCPdegradabilityconstants,bothbetweenenergyfeedstuffs(MSandHM)andbetweenproteinfeedstuffs(leafmealsandCSC).ThedigestibilitystudyshoweddifferencesinDM,organicmatter(OM),CP,aciddetergentfibre(ADF)andneutraldetergentfibre(NDF)intakebetweentreatments(P0.05),butthecorrespondinginvivodigestibilitycoefficientsweresimilaracrosstreatments(P0.05),exceptforCP.Totalintakevariedfrom302#177;4.5inABCto316#177;0.7gperdayinCSC.Averagegrowthrateforthegoatsacrosstreatmentswas26.5#177;2.9g/danddidnotdifferamongtreatments(P0.05).Theseweightswereratherlowerthanexpectedforcrossbreddairygoats.Thiscouldbeattributedtotheshortperiodinvolvedintrial,thatisnotbeinglongenoughtoallowfortangiblegrowthratebutalsoduetothemaizestoverusedasbasaldietbeingoftoolowquality.However,thestudysuggeststhatthebrowsesusedcouldreplacecottonseedcakeassupplementforprotein.
