Analysis on interpretation of Chinese quotations in the C-E interpretation from cognitive perspective

Chinese quotations, special language forms in Chinese, are quoted frequently in the intercultural communication between China and other countries. Due to their cultural background and distinctive features, interpretation of Chinese quotations in the C-E (Chinese-English) interpretation has captured much attention and presented a challenge to interpreters. Cognitive science deals with human beings’ cognitive mechanism and information processing, which is also adopted in interpreting research in recent years. To obtain better understandings on Chinese quotations’ interpretation, this study discusses their features and analyzes comprehension and production of Chinese quotations from cognitive perspective. Based on detailed analysis with examples, it is easy to find interpreters’ cognitive mechanism and interpreting skills play an important role in the interpretation of Chinese quotations. Hence, to interpret Chinese quotations properly and successfully, it is necessary for interpreters to improve their cognitive ability and accumulate interpreting skills through practice.
