How does ethnographic film contribute to anthropological understanding?What are the similarities and differences between the perspectivesand methods of ethnographic film recordings and more conventionalanthropology? Film and text are two different representational forms,each with different strengths and weaknesses. I will argue thatin an encounter between the text-based situational analyses, asit is formulated by the Manchester school, and observational cinema,extensive possibilities arise for the development of anthropologicalunderstanding. An important premise for this argument is the ways inwhich the two perspectives meet in a focus on practice, actors andprocess. Observational cinema can give a kind of sensuous presenceto the events recorded. The situational analysis ensures a basicethnographic process for analytic operations and generalizations.The case that serves as a starting point for the discussion of theinterplay between the two perspectives is the production of thefilm, The fish that disappeared.
