Abstract:Objective To analysis the potential cause of needle stick injuries of nursing staff in infectious diseases department and to provide corresponding preventive measures. Methods The root cause analysis was used to investigate the potential risk factors of needle stick injuries between January 2014 and December 2014. The corresponding preventive measures were carried out, and the incidence of needle stick injuries was observed in the period from January 2015 to December 2015. Results The main reasons for needle stick injuries included low awareness of nursing staff, irregular nursing operation and deficiency in management. The incidence of needle stick injuries was 4.54% in period from January 2015 to December 2015 and was 13.90% in period from January 2014 and December 2014, but with no significant difference (P>0.05). The “three bases” training score, nursing quality of nursing staff and nursing satisfaction of patients were improved after carrying out preventive measures (P<0.05). Conclusion Nurses in infectious disease department are exposed to needle stick injury. It is required to analyze the causes and to take effective measures to reduce the incidence of needle stick injuries.
