Brown spot of passionfruit on Niue Island caused by Alternaria alternata

Abstract The fungus Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler is identified as the cause of brown spot disease of passionfruit on Niue Island (South Pacific). Symptoms are similar to the disease caused by A. passiflorae Simmonds elsewhere in the world. The organism is described together with notes on its pathogenicity and possible origin. Regular applications of the fungicides mancozeb or captafol are recommended for its control.
