Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD) have options regarding the osmotic agents used in PD fluids (PDFs). These include hyper-osmolar glucose, as well as iso-osmolar icodextrin, a soluble glucose polymer. In addition to the randomized, controlled trials (RCT) published over the past two decades, there is a significant body of unpublished evidence also comparing icodextrin to glucose PDFs. The aim of our systematic re- view was to synthesize evidence from RCT comparing the efficacy and safety profile of icodextrin-inclusive vs. glucose-only PDF regimens in patients with ESRD, with a focus on identifying and incorporating unpublished data. Patient survival, death-censored PD technique survival, quality of life, and peritoneal ultrafiltration were the pri- mary outcomes of interest.
