Preservation of Cultural Heritage in a Changing World

The international symposium‘Preservation of Cultural Heritage ina Changing World’ was held at theNational Museum of Ethnology, Osaka(Minpaku) on October 7 and 8, 2017.It was supported by Minpaku and theGrant-in-Aid for Scientific Researchon Innovative Areas - Platform forIntegration and Sophistication of ImageInformation on Area Studies, andwas the first symposium organizedfor the museum’s academic forumseries ‘Research Trends Round-table’,and was organized by members ofthe Department of Advanced HumanSciences. English-Japanese andJapanese-Japanese sign languagesimultaneous interpretation wasprovided in collaboration with the SignLanguage Linguistics Research Section(SiLLR), National Museum of Ethnology.The preservation of culturalheritage is guided and constrainednot only by social and culturalfactors, but also by environmentaland technological factors. In the lastthirty years, our society has begunto face new challenges. One is theoverwhelming environmental issue ofworldwide climate change. Another isa technological challenge: the dramaticshift from analog to digital media– which continues to be a primaryconcern.
