The “graying of America” has arrived, and concern is rising regarding the societal impact of a predominantly older population. Deserving even more attention are the effects the increasing numbers of senior citizens will have on suicide rates. Elders have a higher rate than many younger age groups and account for more suicides than their proportion of the U.S. population would indicate.Police and other first responders must understand the nature of this risk among the aging public.
