During the past year, after starting as a tenure-track fac-ulty member, a number of younger scientists have askedme: "How did you do get there?" The internet is full ofhorror tales of academic careers, but the story I want totell you is the opposite — how the years as a trainee inthe world of academia can lead to a great job. Myintention is not to brag, because I know that I have beenvery lucky. Indeed, I am still a bit astonished that asmall-town girl from eastern Finland ended up all theway here. In this article, I want to contribute to the dis-cussion of career development in the academic environ-ment by reflecting on lessons that I have learned aboutsucceeding as a young academic researcher.
