2010-2011 influenza seasonal vaccine, preliminary mid-season effectiveness estimates: reason for concern, confounding or are we following the right track?

During the last 10 years there have been major advances in influenza surveillance, vaccine production and meth- ods to determine vaccine effectiveness (VE), influenza diagnosis by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and influenza virology. Most of these have been fostered by the threat of a possible pandemic and the planning efforts devoted to minimising its impact.
