The MHRA Drug Safety Updateissued in September 2019(Volume 13, Issue 2) advised ofnew data showing that:n The risk of breast canceris increased during useof all types of hormonereplacement therapy(HRT), except for lowdose oestrogen applieddirectly to the vagina;andn An excess risk of breastcancer persists for longerafter stopping HRT thanpreviously thought.Systemic HRT is taken orallyor applied transdermally tothe skin, e.g. as a cream orpatch. For women with anintact uterus, progestogen isnormally added to oestrogenfor the prevention of adverseendometrial effects such ashyperplasia and cancer.The MHRA update outlinedthat a new meta-analysisof participant data fromthe Collaborative Group onHormonal Factors in BreastCancer was recently publishedin The Lancet. The analysisincluded 108,647 cases ofbreast cancer in prospectivestudies.
