Since the 18" century, coke has been the most important source of carbon for the blast furnace process and it is cen- tral to blast furnace operation. It acts as a fuel, a reductant, a structural support in the blast furnace.’ Recently, due to economic and environmental concerns, reducing coke con- sumption has become one of the main priorities of iron pro- ducers.” In order to achieve this goal, understanding of coke behavior within varies zones of an operating blast furnace is critical. Coke performance is influenced by the properties of parent coal, coking conditions as well as the blast furnace environment.? The importance of coke minerals on influ- encing both coke reactions and strength is well recognized. Coke minerals influence both gasification and graphitization reactions, which influence the coke fine generation and sta- bility of burden structure in the blast furnace.
