Correlates of Parental Role Alteration over their Hospitalized Infants in NICU

This study explored the correlates of parental role alteration over their hospitalized infants in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). 216 parents whose infants were hospitalized in NICU were requested to complete questionnaires on NICU Parental Stress Scale. A parent infant demographic data form was also used to obtain information about the parent and infant characteristics. Mean score, standard deviation and Spearman Rank correlation coefficient (rho) were used to answer the research questions while Mann-Whitney U and Chi-Square tests were used to test the null hypotheses at 0.01 level of significance. The result indicated significant correlation of the NICU parental role alterations with the infant gestational age and infant birth weight respectively. Significance differences were also observed in parental role alterations with regard to the sex of the parents. However, no significant difference was noted in parental role alterations with regard to the number of children born by the parents.
