Phenolic Compounds and Radical Scavenging Activity of Red Seaweeds Harvested from the Atlantic Coast of Sidi Bouzid Morocco

Differents extracts from eight macroalgae species were tested for total phenolic compounds (TPC), flavonoids, condensed tanninscontents and for their radical scavenging activity, in vitro, using DPPH free radical. Dichloromethane and methanol mixture extractof Boergeseniella thuyoides and ethyl acetate extract of Gracilaria multipartita showed higher phenolic content (22.93mg GAE/gextract). Ethyl acetate extract of Boergeseniella thuyoides and Bornetia secundiflora showed higher flavonoids content (2.45 and1.21mg QE/g extract). Dichloromethane extract of Boergeseniella thuyoides and Bornetia secundiflora showed higher condensedtannins content (1.15 and 1.05mg CE/g extract). Among all algae tested, methanol extract of Boergeseniella thuyoides exhibited thehigher scavenging ability on DPPH (EC50= 85μg.ml-1). It can be concluded that Boergeseniella thuyoides is a promising seaweed formore detailed investigations of its antioxidant properties and application possibilities.
