It has been seen a rising trend in recent years foronline shopping businesses across the UK. Customers prefer toplace their orders online to purchase goods and ordered goodsare dispatched directly from regional warehouses (ordistribution centres) to customers’ door steps. A number ofstudies through a literature review indicated that futuregeneration warehouses may be designed and implemented asmore centralised distribution centres as this is the mostcost-effective way to run businesses of this form for many largermanufacturers, suppliers or retailers. These companies havetherefore been seeking for even more efficient and effectivemethods for storing, picking and dispatching goods inincreasingly centralised distribution centres in which a noveldesign of warehousing systems is desired. This paper presents aframework of an RFID-based management system as part of aproposed future generation warehouse design throughapplication and integration of fast-growing IT technologies(radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, wireless sensorsand communication networks) to maximise the warehousecapacity and achieve a better visualisation and real-timevisibility of inventory control and data handling management.
