Air Force Arctic strategy promotes enhanced space, mobility capabilities

The Air Force today formally released its Arctic strategy - which calls for enhanced missile defense, space and polar mobility capabilities, greater collaboration with allies and partners in the Arctic region and improved and expanded readiness and training exercises. The Pentagon last year released its strategy for the Arctic, which highlighted three strategic objectives in the region: build Arctic awareness, enhance operations and strengthen the "rules-based order" in the Arctic. As the service with the largest Arctic presence, the Air Force's strategy is meant to build on those objectives. According to a 2016 report from the Pentagon to Congress, the Air Force is responsible for about 80% of DOD's Arctic resourcing through installations in Alaska, Canada and Greenland, satellite command and control stations, training ranges and more than 50 early warning and missile defense radars.
